A delayed bag is the most common baggage problem and the least dramatic. It normally means your suitcase missed the loading window and is sitting at the airport you came from, waiting for the next service.
You will get it back. The practical questions are when, where it will be delivered, and what you are allowed to buy in the meantime.
Why bags miss flights
Short connections, a late gate change, an aircraft swap to a smaller hold, or simply too many bags for the loading time. None of it is your fault and none of it changes the process.
Once a bag is traced, the airline or its handling agent will usually deliver it to an address rather than make you come back to the airport. Delivery windows can be vague, so give a stable address if you can.

Step by step
Step 1: Report before leaving the baggage hall
Go to the baggage service desk with your tag stub and passport and open a file. Confirm the reference number, then check that the delivery address on the report is the one where you will actually be over the next two days.
Step 2: Confirm the expected flight
Ask which flight the bag is expected on and when delivery should follow. If you are on a short trip, ask whether you can collect it yourself at the airport, which is sometimes faster than a courier.
Step 3: Buy what you genuinely need
Toiletries, basic clothing, and items you cannot borrow. Some airlines set a daily limit and some ask you to claim afterwards. Keep receipts, note the date, and avoid luxury purchases, they get refused and slow the whole claim.
Step 4: Follow up if nothing moves in forty eight hours
Send a short written message with the reference, the flight, the address and a request for a status update. If you are changing hotels or leaving the country, tell them immediately, otherwise the bag will be delivered to an address you have left.
