A cancellation usually arrives as a short message: your flight is no longer operating. The wording is calm, the situation is not. Most people lose the first twenty minutes to frustration, and those twenty minutes are exactly when the remaining seats on alternative flights are taken by someone else.
The goal in the first hour is simple. Get a confirmed seat on another flight, and only then deal with money, food, hotels and complaints. Everything else can be sorted later, a seat cannot.
What is actually happening
Airlines cancel flights for weather, crew limits, technical faults, airport restrictions or because it is cheaper to combine two half empty flights. The reason matters for compensation, but it does not change the first move: rebooking.
When a flight is cancelled, the airline normally owes you a choice between a new flight and a refund. If you accept a refund straight away, you usually give up the rebooking. Decide which one you actually want before you tap anything in the app.

Step by step
Step 1: Confirm the cancellation from the airline itself
Open the airline app or your booking page and check the status there, not only in an email. Screenshot the page that shows the cancellation, the flight number and the date. That screenshot is the single most useful thing you will have later if you claim anything back.
Step 2: Rebook immediately, through the fastest channel you can reach
Try three channels at once if you are travelling with someone: the app self rebooking tool, the phone line, and the transfer desk in the terminal. Whichever answers first, take it. Ask directly for the earliest flight to your destination, including flights operated by partner airlines, and be flexible about nearby airports if that gets you home a day sooner.
Step 3: Ask for what the airline owes you during the wait
If you are stuck for several hours, ask at the desk for meal vouchers, and for a hotel plus transfer if the delay runs overnight. Staff will not always offer it. Ask politely and specifically. If nothing is provided, keep receipts for reasonable food and accommodation, because those are the costs that are most often reimbursed.
Step 4: Protect the rest of your itinerary
Call your hotel and tell them you will arrive late so the room is not released. Move your airport transfer, tour or car rental. If a separate onward ticket is at risk, contact that airline now, while there are still seats, rather than after the connection is gone.
Step 5: File the claim once you are on your way
Compensation depends on the route, the airline and the reason for the cancellation. Submit through the airline's own claim form first with your booking reference, screenshots and receipts attached. Keep the tone factual, list the costs, and give the airline a reasonable deadline before escalating to the national enforcement body.

Things travellers often forget
- A flight moved by more than a few hours is often treated like a cancellation, so the same rights can apply.
- If you booked with a travel agency, the airline may push you back to the agency. Chase both at the same time.
- Do not leave the airport before your new booking is confirmed in writing.
- Card and travel insurance policies sometimes cover delay costs even when the airline refuses.
