What to Do If Your Flight Is Disrupted in the United States

US disruptions work differently from Europe. Rebooking is often generous, cash compensation usually is not.

Domestic flying in the United States is high frequency, which is your main advantage during a disruption. There are usually more flights on the same route today, and airlines can move you between their own hubs fairly easily.

What generally does not happen is a fixed cash payout for a delay, the way it works in Europe. Expect rebooking and refunds rather than statutory compensation.

How the US system works in practice

If the airline cancels your flight and you choose not to travel, you are entitled to a refund of the unused portion, including for non refundable tickets. Refunds apply to significant changes too, not just cancellations.

Meals, hotels and ground transport during controllable disruptions, meaning problems the airline caused, are covered by each airline's own customer service commitments. Those commitments differ by carrier, so it is worth checking your airline's page before you argue at the desk.

Step by step

Step 1: Rebook through the app first

US carriers have strong self service rebooking, and during large disruptions the app will show open seats before an agent can. Look for the change flight option and check other airports in the same metro area.

Step 2: Call while you queue

Phone lines and airport desks are separate queues for the same inventory. Standing in one while waiting in the other doubles your chances. International call centres for the same airline sometimes answer faster.

Step 3: Ask specifically about hotel and meal coverage

Use the phrase controllable delay if the cause is crew or maintenance. Ask what the airline's commitment provides. Weather and air traffic control events are generally treated as uncontrollable, and then you are on your own for accommodation.

Step 4: Take the refund if the trip no longer works

If the new option arrives too late to be useful, ask for a refund to the original payment method rather than a travel credit. You are usually entitled to that, and credits expire.

Domestic specifics worth knowing

  • Ground transport options between nearby airports can be quicker than waiting for a rebooking.
  • Interstate rail and long distance buses cover some corridors well, particularly in the northeast.
  • Checked bag fees may be refundable if the bag arrives very late.
  • Keep the disruption details, some credit card travel protections reimburse expenses.
