Transport problems at airports usually happen at the two edges of the day. You land at one in the morning and the rail link stopped at midnight, or you need to reach another airport before a six o'clock departure.
There is nearly always a way out. The trick is choosing an option that is safe, priced sanely and actually running at that hour.
Know your options before you walk out
Most airports have four layers: rail or metro, scheduled buses including night services, licensed taxis from an official rank, and ride hailing from a designated pickup zone. Some also have shared shuttles and pre booked private transfers.
Night services often exist but run hourly and depart from a different stand than the daytime ones, which is why people assume there is nothing.
Step by step
Step 1: Check the airport's own transport page
It lists night buses, last trains and the location of official taxi ranks. Do this before you leave the terminal, because signal outside the building can be poor and the information desk may be closed.
Step 2: Use official ranks and marked pickup zones
Ignore anyone offering a ride inside the arrivals hall. Licensed taxis queue at a marked rank with visible tariffs. For ride hailing, follow the airport signs to the designated zone and match the plate before getting in.
Step 3: Agree the price or the meter first
In many countries a fixed airport tariff applies. Ask before loading the luggage, and if the driver refuses the meter, take the next car. Paying by card in the app leaves a record, which is useful if something goes wrong.
Step 4: If the airline caused it, ask them to pay
Transport to an airline provided hotel is normally covered, and reasonable transfer costs during a disruption are often reimbursed. Keep the receipt with the time on it, and note the flight number on the back.
Safety at odd hours
- Share your live trip location with someone before you set off.
- Keep bags with you in the cabin of the car where possible, not fully out of sight.
- Have a small amount of local cash, some night services do not take cards.
- If in doubt, waiting inside a lit terminal until the first morning train is a reasonable choice.
